Wind Towers

There has been allot of talk about wind Towers lately I found on the internet. Some of the talk has been about how good they are and some about the bad things. The disadvantages that have come up about Wind towers are cost, noise, production, scenery, and harm to wildlife.
Ideal locations for wind farms are usually very expensive to buy and are not usually beneficial to everyone in community. Wind towers can make people very wealthy and make others wish they had them. Wind farms are also very expensive to maintain properly. In addition to the cost, another area of concern is the noise made by wind farms. One wind generator makes a low, swooshing sound twenty four hours a day that has people complaining. Residents who live near these farms have been saying they are experiencing Health Problems from the turbines.
Another problem with Wind turbines is the amount of energy produced. Wind farms generally have a low energy output, while running at full speed; the largest turbine can only generate enough electricity to power 475 homes. Many wind farms locations where wind energy can be produced on a large scale, are far away from places for which wind energy is best suited. Meaning, the economical nature of wind energy may take a beating in terms of costs of new substations and transmission lines to get the energy where it is needed most.
Although wind power doesn't cause pollution while generating power, it does have a few negative impacts on the environment, Birds for instance like strong winds. It is very common for migrating birds and mammals to fly into wind turbines and get killed. Is this helping the environment? I don’t know you tell me. These are just some things I found that are the negatives from wind towers. There are positives about wind farms also but I would just like to get my readers thinking tell me your thoughts.

  1. After reading your article on the wind turbines, i am surprised that they do not produce more energy for more homes. It would take hundreds or maybe even thousands of them being built to help power larger cities. I do not think that it would be cost benefit to build that many, it not only ruins the beautiful landscape to look at, but takes away from the environment. I know they are pollution free, but if having to build so many in my mind would be more detrimental to the environment than pollution in some cases. Taking land and using it for the turbines also takes habitat away from certain species of birds. Although pollution usually affects larger quantities of organisms, including ourselves i would not like to one day drive into the country and all i could see are wind turbines.

  2. I was also oblivious that wind generates don't mass produce that much power. Your blog reminds me of the ethanol discussions we've had in a lot of my other science classes. It seems that when ever a new green energy source comes out it sounds so great right away, but they never seem to pan out. E-fuels in cars get horrible gas mileage and they have more engine problems. Ethanol is also bad for the environment causing mass clearings of rain forests and grasslands. It seems like the PR for these green energy sources always come out so hyped, except then they fall short with the numerous problems they come with.

  3. I think that the idea of a wind farm is actually a pretty good idea. The cost of transferring the energy where it is needed could be a major problem as you stated. Just the installation of the lines to transfer the power will cost a lot to the company and maybe even the consumer. The wildlife will probably suffer more because they could be killed by turbines or will have to relocate to avoid them. This would mean that the wildlife would have less of an area of habitat to use as more turbines are constructed.
